To understand the industry at the beginning of the '90s, it's important to comprehend just how dominant Nintendo was at the time. There was competition brewing, to be sure, but Nintendo entered the decade controlling an astounding 80 percent of the home videogame market. Its Nintendo Entertainment System had sold 26 million units to date and could be found in 22% of American homes. The Game Boy, which debuted the previous August, had already managed to sell one million units of its own, along with three million game cartridges.

While many analysts were predicting that 1990 would be the year that video games finally ran out of steam, Nintendo's actions said otherwise. Despite increasing pressure from its competition's newer, more advanced machines, Nintendo announced that the NES would be more popular than ever in the '90s. The company increased its manufacturing efforts and announced that it would ship 7.5 million NES consoles in 1990, 1.5 million more than it had shipped the previous year. It also bumped its marketing budget up to $95 million, a dramatic increase of 50 percent from its spend in 1989.

It is a warm place in our hearts for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It's a shame we do not have that hardware sitting around more. But if you there is a chance it needs some TLC and there is always room for a blue LED mod. [Raph] has a wonderful collection of NES hardware repairs and hacks that you should take a look at it.These include replacing the power supply, fixing the cartridge port, monkeying with the CIC chip by a reset button on the controller of audio from mono to stereo, and yes, swap in a blue LED. Oh, and as a side note, coded [Raph] Gets a bit of extra hackers' cred for taking "by hand" VIM "at the bottom of his page. Classic.

I could have a SNES buy for only 50 USD. Hacking that would be much more fun than a hacker xbox or ps3. I hate it that the new technology is more and more complicated so that only bitbrains it can no longer understand.No longer fun, new phones and not to mention hacking consoles to try to repair it, but we throw them into the trash.

SNES, C64, and the others should all their specifications for this version Abandonware hws with so much detail that anyone could build a fundamentally new.

C64 specification was always public. Obtain a copy of the "Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference Guide" from 1983.

They are full of love hardware / software descriptions, and the fold-out diagram.

My copy sits next to my first machine that I have heard since the early 90s. It just needed a new power supply building a few years ago, when the Commodore units were pretty crap.
